My Copycat Frenemy Paid the Ultimate Price

Chapter 1

The first thing I did after being reborn was buy a mountain of designer clothes and jewelry—for my Beagle, Cooper.

In my past life, Carter’s childhood bestie, Chloe, was obsessed with copying my style.

From head to toe, she mimicked everything I wore. Even my best friend, Brianna, would often get confused, saying, "Honestly, from behind, I almost mistook her for you."

At the time, I just thought she was a pathetic, clout-chasing copycat.

But after three months of this constant copying, my health suddenly deteriorated. Before I could even draft a will, I coughed up blood and died on my own doorstep.

After my death, my soul drifted alongside Carter. That was when I heard Chloe’s voice.

"Carter, you’re a genius. Swapping Elena’s blessed fate with mine was brilliant. Now, everything that belonged to her is mine. Including you."

Watching them lock lips, the cold, harsh truth finally hit me.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back to the very day she first copied my French-wave perm.

"Elena, don't take it personally. Chloe only copied your hair because she thinks you have amazing taste."

Carter’s voice snapped me back to reality.

I ignored him and forced out a couple of coughs. The agonizing, suffocating pull in my chest was gone.

I had actually traveled back in time!

"Elena?"

Carter walked over and grabbed my wrist. "Look, you know she’s from a poor, run-down small town. She’s got really low self-esteem. Can you please not embarrass her to her face?"

Looking at the face of the man I had loved so deeply in my past life, I felt nothing but pure disgust.

I shook his hand off. I vividly remembered how he used the exact same excuse to defend Chloe in my previous life.

According to the current timeline, I had just gotten my French-wave perm two days ago. Today, Chloe showed up with the exact same hairstyle.

Later, when I got a custom set of nails from a private nail artist, she scouted my Instagram, had Carter take sneaky photos of my hands, and searched the entire city to find a manicurist who could replicate them.

Her obsession with copying me knew no bounds.

She even took out a thirty-thousand-dollar loan just to buy the same limited-edition Chanel bag I carried.

I hated copycats, so I had subtly called her out on Snapchat several times.

But every single time, Carter would come to play peacemaker.

"She’s copying you because she admires you. She wouldn't do that for just anyone."

"Just treat her like a younger sister. It's totally normal for girls to wear matching outfits."

Over and over, this went on for three months.

By the time I lost my patience and was about to confront Chloe face-to-face, I started coughing violently. I sprayed blood onto the floor and collapsed.

Dead on the spot.

If I hadn't heard their conversation as a ghost, I would have never known my entire life was a setup.

No wonder I, a gym rat who worked out daily, suddenly started coughing, losing strength, and wasting away. No doctor could diagnose me because my very life force was being systematically drained and swapped.

After I died, Chloe completely stole my identity. She was magically adopted by my wealthy parents, became the new heiress of the Vance family, and married Carter in a lavish celebrity wedding. Meanwhile, I was forgotten by the world...

Thinking of this, I clenched my fists but forced a sweet smile.

"Since you view her as a sister, Carter, I guess I don't mind her copying me at all."

Hearing this, Carter practically jumped with joy. He scooped me up and spun me around. "I knew my sweet Elena was the most understanding girl in the world! I knew I chose the right one!"

I smiled in his arms. *I just hope she can afford the price of copying me.*
